The second largest European Smashfest in history is drawing to a close. Let us bring attention to the unplanned Shrek Singles side event at the tournament, garnering 16 entrants, making it what I believe is the largest tournament in SSS history (we'll see if Slam in the Swamp can change this).

Here's a summary of the best parts of the tournament:
Round 3 of Winners' bracket saw a huge upset where Zero Suit Salt, seeded 4th, beat the world No. 1 Kirby, sending him to losers. The legitimacy of this win was questioned by Kirby at the time, as it happened on the Mine stage, and ZSS got a potion which granted temporary slam, giving him what could be considered a free slam. While discussions should be had as to whether this stage should be allowed or not, Kirby rematched ZSS after he was sent to losers' bracket by Crumpet, and Kirby proved himself worthy of his Shrekboards sponsorship, taking the games.
Unexpected was the newcomer Kitanamonk, who in spite of no experience managed to put on an incredible spectacle for the viewers, and took home 5th place tied with Murtag, before running into Kirby in the middle of Kirby's sweep through losers'.
On a personal note, having played him in winners' finals, I feel ZSS is a player slept on too often, although his victory against Kirby may change that. His game is solid enough that I felt the experience of playing him even for just one BO3 made me a much better player, better prepared to take on Kirby.
Kirby and Crumpet met in grands to the surprise of absolutely nobody. After Kirby took game 1 without losing a single slam, it looked like it was already over. In a much closer game 2, Kirby won 3-2 and reset the bracket.
We then move onto true grands, which if I may say, were the most exhilarating games I've ever played.
Gepetto's workshop is the first stage. After Crumpet lost some of a slam bar due to being slammed into the fireplace, the legality of the stage was discussed, but Crumpet took the first game with a close 3-2. Kirby counterpicks to Dragon's Nursery, and an extremely tight game unfolds. Eventually, the two top players in the world find themselves 2-2 on the slam count, but only just missing a full meter. Kirby lands a clutch apple, filling the slam meter. Crumpet then proceeds to avoid all 4 RRH slam tornados, resetting Kirby's slam, Crumpet dashing into a full slam bar, and hitting Kirby in what is one of the closest matches in SSS history.
Hats off to everyone for stunning performances, being a great and hype crowd, and special mentions to ZSS, Murtag, and Kirby for some stellar games, Kitanamonk for being an incredible newcomer, LordApe for helping make everything happen, and BoastingToast for being a fraud who doesn't fly all the way to the UK for tourneys.
Slam on, you wonderful people.
