"I'm done."
These are the words I posted on ShrekUK after the tournament. I decided to quit Shrek SuperSlam.
Let's, however, start at the beginning and tackle a few other things I want to talk about in order to build suspense. Some time ago I attended a monthly Smash Bros. Tournament which held a Shrek SuperSlam side event. It ended up getting 18 entrants (in comparison the Melee and PM tournaments had 12 and 16 respectively) making it the biggest S3 tournament of all one time and I was favourite to win, due to having played the game more than once before the day of the tournament. On the train to the venue I said to myself "if I don't win, I quit". I came second to a player called Tunes that'd played the game for the first time the day before.
Huff n Puff Wolf
Wolf's major problem I found is ending lag on moves, particularly his neutral air. I also discovered during Grand Finals that his lunge (AAAA) combo is NOT guaranteed, putting a major dent into his ability to get kills.
Red Riding Hood
Fuck this character. Tunes' RRH was fucking hell to play against and considering he'd only been playing the game a day I reckon other people's would be beach-ball-down-the-belend painful. EVERY attack and approach I made was beaten out by one of hers and she converts of every one of them with ease. Even with infinites banned against a player with minimal knowledge large damage combos off glancing hits by apples were the norm. If this is the competitive game I want nothing to do with it.
Mid-Level Meta
A lot of the meta seemed to revolve around whiff-punishing, especially since a lot of the really useful movement techniques are considered advanced tech (kind of like Melee without dash-dancing). When someone starts a jab combo the game becomes a case of either trying to get in between the attacks or waiting to punish the end lag, a Melee comparison would be if someone in knockdown could do a series of different get-up attacks.
Slams
There were at least two points where I knocked the Slam out of someone. I think the Slam meta will move to revolve around fighting someone with a full Slam rather than just running away, especially when people with Slam realise they can still use moves to combo into their Slam.
Me and Shrek SuperSlam
Apologies for the lateness of this post, also the fact that it's a bit of a mess. I'm kind of tired after playing DDR and it's currently getting on for 4am. I also recently moved away from home so commuting to work and looking for new jobs has been taking a bit of my time. I felt with EIREXE's recent announcement that it was worth me clearing up my position sooner rather than later. So, have I quit S3? To put plainly:
It's not ogre...
... it's NEVER ogre.
I don't know whether I feel more motivated to take the game more seriously or less seriously. The loss put a dent in my reputation that I don't think I'll ever be able to buff out. I've also got WAY more opportunity in my new location for practising Melee and PM so I'll be focusing my competitive gaming time into them. I'm also currently a member of Team Heir, the team behind Heir II aka the, at the time, biggest Shrek SuperSlam tournament in the world, and I'll be working on stuff for them for the upcoming Heir III. That and I'm hoping to get a full time job before going back into education. I will, however, still be doing my best to provide visual resources for the S3 community. I have a few things I always said I'd do that I haven't done yet, as well as character frame data and a few other misc things. And, let's face it, at the end of the day...
... you freaks need me.
My name is that guy who's absolutely pissed off, I am a Huff n Puff Wolf main, I created transparent character renders, I extracted game sprites, I invented the Soup Grab... but it's not enhuff...
... it's NEVER enhuff...
