I was only 9 years old... When Shrek SuperSlam came out. I never actually owned it - and still don't to this day. Anyway, this is the story of how the Shrek SuperSlam 'meta' came to be. I feel this has become needed because I've started to see people get it wrong, and the 'anniversary' is approaching so why not? Consider it my late Christmas present to all you lot. This is going to be pretty long by the way. Before we start, I'd like to point out that I know the following in real life: * crumpet* Murtag* xkcd* RashAttack* Zero Suit Salt (ZSS) Of these, all but the last go (or at least went) to The University of Warwick. If I ever mention anyone else then I'll use their first name because they don't have an account here. CHAPTER 1 - DISCOVERY The story begins New Years Eve 2014. We had some pretty last minute plans so it ended up being myself, ZSS and another friend (George) at mine. After having previously seen the crashbfan stream and finding it hilarious, George bought his copy of Shrek SuperSlam from when he was a kid. We played it for a bit and found it pretty funny. A few days later, I had a gathering at my place. As I live a bit further from the rest of my friends, people coming to mine usually meant playing some kinds of tournaments and watching a bad film. That resulted in this tournament (we watched Black Dynamite, which I strongly recommend). Again, it was a good laugh and not much else. CHAPTER 2 - TECHSKILL VIDEOS So eventually the Christmas holidays end and by this point I've got Shrek USB loaded on my Wii, so I take it back to Warwick. Again, we find it pretty funny and I also manage to unlock the final character I needed (Cyclops) with the help of crumpet. Now would be a good time to mention that my Warwick friends and I were big into Smash Bros, and would basically spend all night every Friday playing Smash, so as result we start joking about techskill in Shrek. At some point we also run this tournament. Aside from the odd joke here and there, it's not really mentioned - though we do also find the subreddit, which was pretty funny. Easter break rolls around, and in my infinite boredom I decide to start prodding around at Shrek a bit. It dawns on me that in fighting games in general, a good option is to fire a projectile and chase after it for a good followup (I play Ice Climbers in Melee, so desynced ice block + run up and grab is quite common). I realise Red Riding Hood can do this vertically with her aerial plus a shield drop, and if you follow up with a grab it looks quite stylish. I see an idea for a pretty humorous video, so I throw something together in Windows Movie Maker and upload it. I also posted it to the subreddit. Time goes on, I go back to Warwick, we play some more Shrek at ungodly hours when any sane man would be sleeping, and eventually Murtag starts saying about how shield dropping could potentially end hitlag or similar. So I made a video on it. I much later once saw someone say that Murtag dropping was specifically cancelling the endlag with a shield drop, so I'd like to take this moment to say that I made that up and have no evidence that it does. A bit later we find that airdash->grab is also not terrible, especially with Gingerbread Man. Crumpet was "jealous Murtag had a tech names after him", so we called this Crumpet Dashing. As a closing statement for this chapter, I'd like to clarify the following: all the videos were jokes (I spell 'aerial' a different but always incorrect way in every video, and consistently link to wrong songs), and my friends and I rarely played Shrek, and never before the hour of 3am. Basically, this whole thing was nowhere near serious. CHAPTER 3 - GETTING SERIOUS So a couple of weeks since the last videos pass, and I wake up to a couple of Reddit PMs. Turns out it's the mod (creator?) of the subreddit, Jaylez, and he'd made me a mod. This is where things start to pick up a bit, and the subreddit starts seeing actual activity. The weekend this happened was also a LAN party at uni, so I went in and told my Smash friends. A couple others overheard and said it was hilarious. Next week I go to gaming and people are asking for a tournament, so I oblige (I wasn't going t run one at first as Murtag couldn't make it). By this point we had been recording Project: M and sometimes Melee every week, so we recorded this to, resulting in this video, the most successful on the channel to date. Due to the video, as well as the subreddit getting posted around in places such as /r/smashbros and Melee Hell, the popularity started to shoot up. From here we became aware of a user named BoastingToast, who was posting a lot and seemed to be serious. This was confirmed when I found him on Facebook and he told all of Melee Hell he was indeed serious. To this day I have never known if Toast was 100% telling the truth or if he was playing an even bigger joke on all of us. This continues for a bit - ZSS makes ShrekUK, someone else makes Shrek SuperSlam Hell, Mike Hagger tweets the video and so on, all making this 'scene' look even more legitimate and less like the joke I started with. CHAPTER 4 - GUYS PLZ ZSS being the huge troll he is (I honestly think this would not be where it is without him being so dedicated to making me miserable) decides to make 'Aerial to the Thrown'. I would like to point out that this was a regular gathering at my place as described above. The only differences were: * ZSS copy+pasted the Heir to the Throne event page and edited it to be about Shrek. * We streamed Shrek SuperSlam. * I invited friends from Warwick, but only xkcd came. Other than that it was nothing special, not an 'invitational' tournament and probably not really anything to tally results from. We watched Miami Connection after. You'll be pleased to know that this story is closing up now. I woke up the next day to see ShrekBoards had been created, and as I waited with xkcd in the train station, I got messaged on Facebook about a 'sponsorship', which was perhaps the funniest part of this whole thing to date. The Slam in the Swamp trailer came out not long after. From there the scene continued to grow into what we have now, though without my input, so I guess this is the end. CHAPTER 5 - EPILOGUE So the last thing I want to say is thanks to everyone. It's been an incredibly strange and funny journey, and not one I think I'll forget anytime soon (not as long as I know ZSS anyway), not to mention the exposure this thing got. It was fun meeting Lalzu and LordApe at Heir, and I'd like to say a massive thanks for Slam in the Swamp. My experience of it was sitting in Skype with ZSS, George, Murtag, xkcd, crumpet and a few others, laughing when our hosts came on in suits, cheering each other on and generally trying to make the best of a frankly bizarre scenario as well. It was good to finally play Toast as well. I never play this game at all anymore, and it's amazing to see actual legitimate techskill get made, as well as cool discoveries like the debug menu. So thanks for reading all, I hope this clears up any misinformation. I would be super interested to hear how all of you got into this, especially from BoastingToast, LordApe and EIREXE. Happy New Year everyone!

ShrekFrauds | Kirby.
What a year it's been, with all the ups and downs. I'm proud to say I've had a part in it; I do not want to boast but I believe without my help in pushing this joke so far this would not of been the journey that it has become.
So a toast! To Mr Kerr: for putting up with it all. To Mr Rose: for inspiring a new generation of slammers. To Mr Cooper & Mr West: for making this site and for your dedication. And to all others I thank you for the entertainment you have provided.
Thank you so much for all the good times I've had this year and a happy new year to everybody.
See you later - Che

I found out the subreddit existed and looked around, at first I was scared that the scene was already kill, because I fell in love with the game the second I saw it.
I am a lover of obscure games, I play a lot of them, the last one I played before getting into Shrek was Falling Stars, the worst RPG you will ever play, it's built in the Barbie engine.

Early 2015 I stumbled across a copy of the game at a used game shop that I frequent. I remembered playing the game at a friend's house as a kid and enjoying it, and I owned the GBA version of the game, but I couldn't afford it at the time. Later that week I decided to look into the game online and see if it was worth buying once I got the money. Completely by chance, I stumbled across traces of the names Kirby, Crumpet, ZSS, etc. and while I figured the competitive scene was a joke/dead, I bought the game anyway because I had always had a love for both Smash Bros and extremely bad games (I had actually just recently been playing Shrek Treasure Hunt at the time) and the mechanics of S3 looked really fun and interesting. I figured I was either going to get a fun fighting game or a fun B game so it was a win-win situation.
Anyway, I got home and beat all but about four mega challenges within 2-3 days. Immediately, genuinely fell in love with the game and decided that even if the competitive scene was a joke, I was going to get my other Smash friends into the game (they're also all giant meme-lovers) and make the scene real. Eventually I found my way to Shrekboards and started discovering tech, and now here I am.
Interestingly, just as an aside, I actually started off as a G-nome main and beat most of the game as G-nome, before I picked up Robin Hood and, later on, Luna, and realized how much deeper I could take their gameplay.

I got the game first for PS2 when I was 8 in 2005 and mained almost every character until I decided to solely main Anthrax. In 2015, I sold the PS2 version to a friend and bought the Gamecube version in November shortly after my 18th birthday. I discovered this site in August 2015 and I had heard about Slam in the Swamp, and decided to join it because of my own free will to be able to participate in a small community and attempt to make this game's competitive scene real. Two fun facts:
1. I played this game BEFORE I played SSBB, which was my first Smash game. 2. This game, which is my second favorite game of all time, and Mario Party 7 which is my alltime favorite, are both over 10 years old and were released in late 2005.

This was a great read. I guess I'll tell you guys my story and give my thoughts on the whole ordeal after. It all started when I was on the way to a local Smash 4 weekly with my good friend KDB (Previously regarded as the best Yoshi in the US). I wanna say this was around April or May. I was talking about how every time I pick up a random obscure game I somehow make it competitive and learn some crazy shit (I think I was talking about Kirby Fighters on the 3DS in specific). He asked me if I had ever heard of Shrek SuperSlam, told me he played it as a kid and would murk me with his Gingy. I told him "I'm gonna put that shit on my Wii tonight and fuck you up." That night, I got home at 2 AM and downloaded the ISO. While it was downloading, I decided to look up the game and see if there was anything competitive about it. First thing I searched was "Shrek SuperSlam Tier List", which lead me to the subreddit. To my surprise, there were others that (I thought) played the game competitively. Even better, it seemed active, as the Murtag Dropping video was posted 4 days prior. I loaded up the game and instantly picked RRH 'cause Kirby's RRH combo looked cool as fuck. That night I studied the game's mechanics until 6 AM. I realized that throwing them against the wall bought me more time to charge apples, and I also noticed the CPU always stood still after hitting them with a single charged apple, which spawned my BnB throw > charge apple > ABB combo I do today, as well as the first infinite. I instantly banned infinites because I was worried about my character being banned. I genuinely saw a lot of potential for the game to be competitive. Thinking the UK players were serious, I started trash talking them as I clearly understood the game much better than they did after only a night of labbing. I continued to research the game and write down important secret information that I would bring out when the time was right. Shortly after, ShrekBoards was created and Slam in the Swamp was announced. Not knowing that the UK players were simply trolling to get a rise out of me, I was super excited to finally prove I was better. I tried my hardest to get people from my scene into the game, but I've still only managed to get a few people remotely interested. Come SitS, you all pretty much know the story. My first 2 opponents were DQ'd and I had no warmup before my match with Kirby. I was very determined going in, but as some of you may know, I'm an emotional player and it's extremely easy for me to go on tilt. I had never played another RRH, and I had no clue how to deal with Kirby. He ran away, and every time I tried to go in, he would hit me with an apple, but every time I threw one he powershielded it. I went on tilt and it was history. I tried to act like I wasn't mad, but the quick exit on my end was indeed a ragequit. I was very mad at myself because I knew I was better but just couldn't get around his braindead strategy. I took my anger out in losers bracket. I JV4'd LongShoreDrift, and beat Crumpet with his own character just out of anger towards his region. When faced by EIREXE, I was a little afraid to play another RRH ditto, but it was less laggy so I managed to play through it. After a shaky game 1, I decided I wasn't comfortable in the RRH ditto so I switched to Gingy, which was a much easier matchup for me because of Gingy's braindead playstyle. After beating him, I was confident enough to try the RRH ditto once more against Kirby. I had a lot of time to think about what I did wrong so I had already figured out a way around his playstyle and the rest was pretty easy. After SitS I wrote some guides and spiffed up the sub, but then disappeared from SSS for a while. The reason for this is I was extremely determined to climb the ranks in Smash 4 because I made Honorable Mentions in my region's Power Rankings. I still lurked here and there but for the most part I just played Smash. I watched as new players joined and discovered new things like Soup Grabs and Ogremented Combos. It all made my head spin ('cause you guys made it sound way more complicated than it is) and I stayed out of it until November.
Now, as for my thoughts on the matter, I would like to say it makes me a little bit sad knowing that back in the day I was the only one taking it seriously. Here I thought I was taking the throne of a new competitive scene, but I guess I was the competitive scene. On the other hand, I'm very proud to be one of the few responsible for this game's early growth. Being one of the founding fathers of what this game has turned into is an honor. I would like to say I am extremely grateful to everyone's efforts to push this community, we wouldn't be here if it weren't for Kirby and the gang's trolling, my gullibility, Lalzu and Lordape's initiative on making the scene look serious, EIREXE for breaking open the game and giving us tools to understand it, and all of the newer players for pushing this game's meta. I love you all and hope to meet you guys eventually.

I did actually own Shrek SuperSlam when I was a kid, although it was the PS2 version. The only real memories I have of it are being playing as Shrek on what are now illegal stages. I guess you could say from day one this has been a bit botched. I know the following people outside of ShrekBoards, although most of them don't play pivotal roles in the founding of the forum: - Lalzu (Toby) - Mr. Misfire - KingRui - longshoredrift - starfahx - Geg - mr skeltal Humble BeginningsI rediscovered the game when a few friends and I, including Lalzu, King Rui and Mr. Misfire, got together in late 2014 and someone decided that we should play it. We played free for all, and I went undefeated as Shrek. If only we then created ShrekBoards, and my victory served as some meaningful inspiration or omen. It was quite the opposite - I took the piss out of the guys, mainly Lalzu, about how good I was at S3; I was of course joking, and had no desire to go back and play it again. To hold some sort of credibility to my fake bragging, I went online to prove that the game was competitive, and found a largely dead subreddit. Come Summer and every now and then I'd taken a glance at the Shrek SuperSlam subreddit. Figuring it to be pretty funny, and still not sure how much of a joke it was, I had a look into some of Kirby's Shrek Tech videos and had a laugh at his editing and song choices. Toby and I have a talk about it, but I don't think it came to much at first. Well, not until one day we got talking and he had hatched a "brilliant" plan. The Birth of ShrekBoardsOn July the 5th, Toby told me about his idea for a rival to SmashBoards, but for the Shrek SuperSlam community. Despite neither of us playing the game, we thought it would be a funny joke for a few days before the scene dipped back into obscurity. As he got to work creating the specific boards, I spent time doing some research into the scene. I rediscovered Kirby's videos, learnt about the tournaments of the Warwick crew, joined the facebook groups and got interested in the apparent rivalry between Kirby and BoastingToast. I'd like to note this is where I started to get half serious, although I still didn't expect anything to come of our venture. Figuring Kirby to be the closest thing the game had to a world champion, I messaged him on Facebook with the offer of a "sponsorship," as he so accurately puts it. Since we here at ShrekBoards don't have any sort of donation mechanic, or do anything useful that deserves pay, we can't afford to cover players' travel costs or anything similar. The offer was purely an understanding, in that Kirby would wear our tag and we would do as much as we could to promote him, his twitch channel, his twitter, etc. His initial reaction, and now I know how it reflects how much of a joke the whole thing was to him, was "Good god." Fifteen minutes later, he accepted the deal, uttering the historic words "Sure I guess?" Kirby told me that Crumpet would also be interested in being one of our players, so I jumped at the opportunity and messaged him as well. He was at work at the time, but told me he'd be eager to spread the word of Shrek. I still owe both of them Nando's. To publicize the forum, I created this post on the subreddit and a similar one in ShrekUK. We had thirty members in ten days. Now I became fully serious. Discussion took off, with Toast spearheading the movement. His index of game mechanics, as well as his RRH character guide, really helped to give us a formal look as all those new players signed up. Perhaps also to blame for our unwarranted success was that we decided to accept the small responsibility of the game's first "proper" tournament. Toby created a thread about it and I put together a really cheesy trailer, as well as making another post on the subreddit. As you can see, this all happened just one day after we created the forum, and we very much had a "leap before you think" attitude. We weren't sure netplay was going to work, whether or not we'd get enough players, how we were going to get our stream setup working, and we encountered other such problems along the way. As you can see in the thread for SitS, the tournament had to be delayed when my floor collapsed under me and I both hurt my leg and couldn't really have Lalzu over to run the stream. Heir IIIn between the founding of ShrekBoards and SitS taking place, I met kirby , crumpet , Zero Suit Salt and Murtag at Heir II. I watched Kirby make a guy salty in his Melee singles pool because he took three stocks by wobbling him as Ice Climbers, then went over to say hello. ZSS had Kriby, Crumpet and me sign his copy of S3, and until today it remains the most valuable copy in existence (citation needed). We parted ways, and I soon rediscovered Kirby playing Shrek SuperSlam money matches for small change in another room. Having previously promised him a £5 money match, we played and he robbed me in broad daylight. Soon, we decided to host an impromptu S3 tournament. ZSS went around all the setups in the room asking people if they'd like to play, and I went and put a sign up by the TO desk. In the end, we had sixteen players, and after considering all the DQs at SitS the Heir II tourney is still the largest tournament the game has seen. We soon built up a small crowd, and by the time it came to the final (Kirby vs Crumpet), the hype was building. A few videos still exist, although recording a CRT with a mobile phone didn't end too well for anyone, and the videos are more of a testament to the attention we garnered than the gameplay. After the tournament, I introduced Kirby to Armada (top level SSBM player for those who don't know). We invited him to a Shrek SuperSlam money match, but he was too much of a wimp to play a real game... In reality, he said "maybe later," (read: "no"). I still believe that one day it's going to happen. Slam in the SwampShortly before SitS, I was interviewed by eSports journalist SmashCapps, who wrote this article on the whole ordeal. Some of the information is incorrect, and I suppose this thread is here to clear everything up. When SitS finally came around, it was hosted in Toby's bedroom. starfahx ironed the green sheet you could see behind us (he also bought the trophy and helped TO but he really saved us with his ironing skills), because it was creased to all hell when we found it a few hours before we went live and longshoredrift lent us the apparatus to hold it up. Mr. Misfire practiced Dronkey in the other room. There was lag here and there, but somehow the tournament went smoothly. That is until everyone started singing Smash Mouth... We were pretty blown away by how many viewers we got, and the attention from Alpharad. SitS did wonders for publicizing us. We saw a massive spike in page views during and after the tournament, and since then the scene has really taken off. We now average about 150 page views every day, and are about to hit 100 members. Lalzu and I have been able to stop being a guiding hand, and you lot have made the scene grow naturally through your discovery of new tech skill and serious discussion of the game. Afterthoughts I haven't had the chance to play the game much recently, due to having so much work to do, but for the most part I've been keeping up to date with the meta. We were going to have another netplay tournament this holiday season, but I went and broke my arm ice skating. In conclusion, Lalzu and I may not be the sharpest tools in the shed, but ShrekBoards has become so much bigger than we could have ever imagined. I'd like to personally thank every single one of you, and I hope that you keep on passionately playing S3. Feel free to ask any questions about my account of events, and stay tuned - there's more to come of ShrekBoards yet!

Now, as for my thoughts on the matter, I would like to say it makes me a little bit sad knowing that back in the day I was the only one taking it seriously. Here I thought I was taking the throne of a new competitive scene, but I guess I was the competitive scene.Aww, I feel a bit bad now. We never intended to troll anyone, we were just so astonished and baffled by how this was developing and evolving that we had to keep pushing forward. Plus, as I said, a part of me thought you were pulling some next-level trolling On the other hand, I'm very proud to be one of the few responsible for this game's early growth. Yeah, I think the best thing to come out of this has been some new cool people to talk to, and you've all done some pretty astonishing things. Misfire - KingRui - longshoredrift - starfahx - Geg - mr skeltal And here I thought mr. skeltal was just a really dedicated random. Everything I know is a lie Figuring Kirby to be the closest thing the game had to a world champion, I messaged him on Facebook with the offer of a "sponsorship," as he so accurately puts it. Since we here at ShrekBoards don't have any sort of donation mechanic, or do anything useful that deserves pay, we can't afford to cover players' travel costs or anything similar. He was at work at the time, but told me he'd be eager to spread the word of Shrek. I still owe both of them Nando's. I still have screenshots of that because I was firing them out to the Warwick lot / ZSS & George as quick as I could, it was hilarious. I look forward to the cheekiest of Nando's. Aw man I remember staying in denial for so long thinking "there's no way they'll get netplay working", "nobody will show etc". Glad you proved me wring though. Soon, we decided to host an impromptu S3 tournament. ZSS went around all the setups in the room asking people if they'd like to play, and I went and put a sign up by the TO desk. This is something I failed to mention in mine, but the moment of turning around after Grands and seeing all those people was really something. that tourney was a lot of fun, and gave us scrubs who didn't make it out of pools something to do on the Sunday.[/quote] Shortly before SitS, I was interviewed by eSports journalist SmashCapps, who wrote this article on the whole ordeal. Some of the information is incorrect, and I suppose this thread is here to clear everything up. Yeah that was one of my main driving factors for typing all this out, another example is the previous admin of Shrek SuperSlam Hell getting us mixed up. This is hilarious, congrats. Did you own the suits already, or did you rent/buy them for the tournament?

I suppose I should put my regret filled account onto this incriminating document. The only people I know on this forum are skrull and Flick . Skrull has played once (but for a significant amount of time) and Flick has played a couple of times and wants to run a tournament in the Northwest. It was at Heir II The Throne (UK's biggest Smash tournament) I found out that Shrek SuperSlam had a competitive scene. I found out about the tournament at Heir but it was too late to enter. I spoke to Flick about it as he has a sixth sense for stupid fighting games due to being a competitive Playstation All-Stars and he gave me the basic info. I held a Smash fest at my house a few months later and bought the game partly as a joke. I played it the day before with my friend and was in absolute stitches, firstly at my friend managing to glitch himself into the wall then proceeding to rocket up to the ceiling, then at black Humpty Dumpty for obvious reasons. We're talking falling out of my chair in tears kind of laughing. We played a little bit but not much (at one point we had Smash 64, Melee, PM, Slam and Soul Calibur II set up in the same room. Smash 4 was relegated to its own room). It was a couple of days later when everyone had left I messed around a bit with the game and discovered the Soup Grab. Since the tech is SOOO important to the meta game I just had to stick around. Forgot to add, I did meet Lalzu and Lord Ape at Kickstart 4, a Melee tournament in London. We spoke a bit about SSS but I wasn't much of a conversationalist due to being in a bad move over transport and accommodation problems. I'm glad I've been able to help out how I can. I plan to do a certain amount of work for this community before I make the decision to call it quits or not. Lack of actual tournaments is reducing my interest but don't worry, I'll be around for a while yet.
